About the Club
Tyldesley Tennis Club provides a welcoming place for people to play tennis, meet other players and become part of the club. Members can enjoy regular social tennis, arrange their own games and take part in competitive league tennis.
We welcome both experienced players and those who are newer to the sport. Anyone interested in joining can arrange a visit to see the club and try out the courts before becoming a member.

Tyldesley Tennis Club has three all-weather AstroTurf courts, two of which are floodlit for evening play. We also have portable court markers, nets, bats and balls available for members who would like to play pickleball.
Our clubhouse includes changing rooms, showers, toilets and a kitchen. Members can also enjoy table tennis, darts and pool when they are not on court.
Parking is available at the club, and ramps provide step-free access down to the courts and up to the clubhouse.

Our club was founded in 1910 by a small group of local tennis enthusiasts, who were gifted a small plot of land located next to cornfields along a rough track off Manchester Road.
The original three grass courts remained until 1952, when two were replaced by more easily maintained ‘shale’ courts. However, lack of funds meant that the third court – currently the Roy Pearson Court - was abandoned for around 25 years to be used for social events and car parking.
The first club house, dating back to the club’s founding in 1910, was a simple yellow wooden structure, albeit with a kitchen and changing rooms, that remained standing until 1975 when unfortunately it burned down. This was replaced with the brick building you see today.
In 1976, when property developers purchased the adjacent farmland to build new houses, they agreed to pay for the resurfacing of the two existing courts and the resurrection of the third, as compensation for the loss of the direct access road to the club. The preference was for ‘grey green’ – a bitumen court surface with a top dressing of grit – which delivered a low bounce and enabled players to slide into their shots.
As the ‘grey green’ courts were coming to the end of their life, the club decided to replace them with state-of-the-art artificial grass; and under the direction of our then chairman, John Turner, in 1994 we began the arduous process of applying for and successfully securing grants and loans – principally from the LTA, Bolton Sports Federation and Viridor Waste Management - to fund this ambitious project. Tyldesley was one of the first tennis clubs in the area to invest in artificial grass courts and floodlighting.
Since then, the courts have been resurfaced once more, in 2017, and we are currently preparing the groundwork for securing funds for replacing the existing courts within the next 2-3 years.
